This funny plastic bung was in the hole. It wasn't doing a very good job of sealing it and no wires ran through it.

Boot lid - stripping
The spring just eases out. In the bag is the number plate light which has two screws holding it in.
There are 3 nuts that hold the number plate light cover in place.
