The windscreen wiper unit

Cleaning the bonnet struts and wiper module

Cleaned up the bonnet struts. I have kept the fixing with some masking tape when I originally took it off.

The wiper unit just had surface rust.

I disassembled it carefully keeping track of the order things came apart.

Cleaning up some bolts

Bolts for the gear box mount (2) and front axel (4).

Rubber trim on the body, by the door

Just had a final look over the body to check nothing was left on before it goes off to shot blasting.

Cleaning the gear stick and selector rod

The gear stick was a bit rusty but nothing to major.

The gear selector rod had some surface rust.

Free of rust and paint.

Cleaning the front brakes

The front brakes had quite a buildup on rust and grime.

The internal parts needed cleaning and re-greasing.

The brake drum and back plate cleaned up well.

Fortunately the front brake cylinders where in good condition.

Cleaning the rear brakes

The rear of the brakes looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a few years! It seems to have green mold growing on it in places.

After taking the brake cylinders off, I tried to shift the pistons which push the brakes onto the drum. As you can see, the result was they broke!

Both drum and backplate have come up well. Later I need to cost them with krust and then paint.

Front axel

Once I had the floor on wood supported by axle stands it was time to put it back together...

When I took the axle off some time ago, I had sanded and painted it. Welding up the odd hole that existed.

Just 4 bolts hold the axle to the floor. There is a small recess that helps locate the axel.

Unfortunately, during my last attempt to return it to the road, I had not completed the paint job as can be seen here.

Moving into the garage...

Its always good to have somewhere dry to keep things!

There once was a floor...

Fortunately, at this point a new garage appeared. As if by magic...

Besides the WWII jeep there was an empty space...

First some wood grew through the concrete floor...

Then the new floor of a Beetle appeared.

As good as this was, something was missing....
